NAÏVE AND SENTIMENTAL PAINTINGS

"I took the title Naïve and Sentimental Paintings from pieces of music by John Adams’ Naïve and Sentimental Music. I felt it was a rather quaint yet charming association to start this new project of Abstract paintings with. Its ambition is technological convergence, using high tech computer imagery and converging this with Jurassic technology such as oil painting. On the computer I have generated thousands of images – I go through this multitude of images like someone walking in a new, unknown landscape. Only to go there with the memory of things I’ve admired and that have impacted on me – so with these very new, unknown images my eye saw (and picked out) images that may look like a Klee, an Arthur Dove, the abstract works of Nicholas Roerich (a Russian Mystic), even Morris Louis or the music of Charles Ives etc – i.e. the good values that I have come to learn from the 20th Century."
